The conversion and baptism of Brian “Head” Welch, the former guitarist of Korn, has been creating a lot of interest in pop culture. I saw tonight that “Matthew 11:28” and “Jordan River” were high on the list of searches today at Yahoo. Most of the news articles mention that he was baptized in the Jordan River, and has Matthew 11:28 tattooed on his neck…thus the buzz.
I admit I was a bit of a cynic when I first heard this, and another rock star reminded me that we should give him the benefit of the doubt. (Thanks Zach…you’re right!) I’ve been a bit of a skeptic since Daryl Strawberry had a very public conversion around 1990 and quickly discounted it. (Although I’ve heard he is now seeking his faith again.)
The conversion of Saul in the first century probably made similar waves, even without Yahoo. Though he did some immediate public ministry, he disappeared for a few years and grew before he really began his intense ministry. Perhaps that would be best for anyone in the spotlight who declares themself a follower of Jesus. Let Brian Welch celebrate his new faith publicly, but now disappear from the public eye, get some solid people around him, and let the Spirit go to work. After a few years, emerge again and let the work of Jesus in his life be seen.
I do hope that this all goes well for him, and that his testimony can influence many. Perhaps it would be best later, rather than sooner.
