tribes

I’ve never really jumped on the Seth Godin bandwagon. I read one of his books a few years ago, and though it was good, it seemed like a lot of common sense. Since then, I’ve just found plenty of other books that were worth my time.

But…I heard many positive remarks from friends about Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us, so I decided to read it. (Reading a book based not on marketing, but on the positive remarks of friends, is very Seth Godin, don’t you think?)

You might have guessed from a few quotes I posted from the book, but it was worth my time. And speaking of time…I thought this would be a quick read since it’s so short. But it wasn’t. I found myself reading small portions at a time, and then pausing to reflect on Godin’s ideas.

So was this book common sense? Yes, sort of. I think I read a lot of ideas that I intuitively have understood, but he helped bring shape and words to them in ways that I had not. Beyond that, it’s just an inspiring read that pushes me toward being the kind of leader I’ve hoped to be.

And one more thought…Tribes is a good companion to one of my other recent favorites: The Starfish and the Spider (blog post). I think that the leadership Godin describes is what is needed to cultivate and lead starfish networks. The Starfish and the Spider describes the structure, while Tribes describes the model of leadership.

Should you read it? Only if you have a deep awareness of what is out of whack around you, or a deep hope for what might be. And if you want to be a part of bringing about the change that we desperately need.
